History of Morgellons Disease

Morgellons disease is a controversial and poorly understood condition characterized by a range of dermatological and neurological symptoms. The term "Morgellons" was first used in the 17th century by Sir Thomas Browne, who described a condition in children exhibiting strange fibers in their skin. However, the modern understanding of Morgellons emerged in the early 2000s when a growing number of individuals began reporting similar symptoms, including the sensation of crawling, biting, or stinging under the skin, as well as the appearance of unusual fibers or particles. Despite its historical roots, Morgellons remains a condition shrouded in mystery and debate within the medical community.

Until now, that is.

Symptoms of Morgellons Disease

The primary symptoms of Morgellons disease include the sensation of insects crawling on or under the skin (formication), skin lesions, and the presence of unusual fibers, threads, or granules in or on the skin. Patients often report fatigue, cognitive difficulties, and joint pain, which can significantly impact their quality of life. The fibers associated with Morgellons are often described as being colorful or having a synthetic appearance, leading to speculation about their origin. However, these symptoms have not been consistently linked to a specific medical or environmental cause.

The medical community remains divided on Morgellons disease. Many doctors and dermatologists consider it a form of delusional parasitosis, a psychiatric condition in which individuals mistakenly believe they are infested with parasites. Others argue that Morgellons may have a physical or environmental cause, such as an infectious agent or exposure to environmental toxins. Due to the lack of consensus, patients often face skepticism and difficulty obtaining a diagnosis or treatment, leading to frustration and mistrust of the medical system.

New Era

Recent studies have determined Morgellons Disease to be a Foreign Body Reaction to permanent sutures left inside the body during surgical procedures. Some patients immune systems are very sensible to foreign objects left inside the body for long periods of time, causing itching, lesions, fatigue and disrupting the homeostasis, leading to numerous health issues. As of 2025, the cause of Morgellons Disease has been established, ending a decades long mystery.
